Developmental Editing

You’ve spent hours crafting a great story, and you know that there are probably some things that could be improved, but you’ve spent so much time with it that you can’t tell what those things are anymore. Enter the developmental editor: the person who will help you identify the plot holes, the gaps in character development, the absent sense of place, and other details that are in your head but didn’t make it to the paper.

Interested? Contact me to set up a consultation and a sample edit, which is done free of charge and includes the first five pages of the manuscript and five pages from the back half of the manuscript. Based on the sample edit, I will develop a quote for your work.

What a developmental edit includes:

  • A close reading of the manuscript, with special attention paid to structure, plot, point of view, characterization, setting, dialogue, pacing, stakes, theme, voice, continuity, and other aspects of craft;
  • Developmental-centric in-line margin notes/questions on the electronic document itself, via track changes;

  • Long-form editorial letter addressing aspects of craft, detailing revision recommendations and questions;

  • Unlimited email correspondence;

  • One-hour phone or Zoom conference call (after delivery of editorial letter) to discuss revisions
